How to Minimize Stripe Fees

While Stripe's fees are generally competitive, there are strategies to optimize costs:

  1. Use ACH for Large Transactions: For US customers making large purchases, ACH can save significantly compared to credit cards.
  2. Negotiate Volume Pricing: If you process over $100,000/month, contact Stripe for custom pricing.
  3. Optimize Currency Strategy: Consider opening local entities to avoid currency conversion fees in your primary markets.
  4. Leverage Stripe Billing for Subscriptions: For recurring revenue, Stripe Billing (0.5% - 0.8%) can be more predictable than per-transaction fees.
  5. Reduce Chargebacks: Every dispute costs $15. Invest in fraud prevention (Stripe Radar) and clear communication to avoid disputes.

Best Practices for Accurate Fee Calculation

  1. Factor in All Fees: Don't just calculate the base rate. Include international fees, currency conversion, and any optional services.
  2. Monitor Your Effective Rate: Track your actual fees monthly. High international sales can significantly increase your effective rate.
  3. Use This Calculator Regularly: As you expand to new markets or add services, recalculate to understand the true cost.
  4. Consider Volume Discounts: If your Stripe fees exceed $1,000/month, you may qualify for negotiated rates.
